What You Need to Make Weed Pizza
Today weed pizza is mythical on multiple layers, literally! Where cannabis and culinary meet, it takes the old and adds the new for beautiful infusions and incredible new cannabis creations.
Weed pizza all starts with infusing cannabis into olive oil to stay with the authentic Italian flavors. That cannaoil is used on all three levels of the pie; crust, sauce and toppings. So we’ll have three recipes in which we add extra lovin touch.
It sounds like a lot, but you can have a pizza put together in about an hour, from scratch, once you have oil made. And freezing extra weed dough and making extra THC-infused sauce makes everything easier the next time.
How to Make Cannaoil
So, our recipes kick off with weed pizza’s key ingredient first and then we’ll do dough and finally sauce incorporating the oil in everything. The oil recipe should yield THC anywhere from 5 to 20mg per slice, depending on the strain used and the extraction.
Note: You can adjust the potency of your canna olive oil by adding or subtracting oil and/or weed as desired.
Weed-infused olive oil looks and tastes innocent but can hit like a heavyweight so plan accordingly. It’s a pretty simple infusion but it takes time, so best to get it out of the way first. But to do that, first you have to activate your weed.
Decarbing Weed
Weed needs to be heated before it will get you high. There’s a chemical reaction heat causes where weed becomes ‘activated.’ That means it’s psychoactive after being decarboxylated, or “decarbed.”
Until weed is activated, very little of the cannabis flower is bioavailable because there’s no tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) yet. So, to make any edible, topical or tincture, you have to have to prep cannabis first with heat and time, aka decarbing.
Why Do We Decarb Weed?
Of course, decarbing happens on the fly as you smoke herb, but this also destroys up to 60% of THC. Yikes, right? Well cannaoil keeps a lot more of the good stuff making this multi-step process worth the effort.
Vaping delivers more THC than smoking because it gently warms bud without combustion. The same principle is true for decarbing except the temps stay low enough not to vaporize THC. So, maximizing THC yield is best in the kitchen where time and heat deliver a fuller extraction.
How to Decarb weed
Decarbing happens at a temp too low to vaporize weed’s good stuff but high enough to cause the chemical reaction. Warming weed past 220º F is the key to powering your bud for liftoff.
Most decarbing recipes call for a temp of 240º F for 40 minutes for up to an ounce of weed. Anything over 250º will degrade the THC.
Decarb = 1 oz. MJ + 240º F + 40 mins
The most common measure for cannaoil is one cup of oil per half ounce. So, an ounce for two cups, etc. For a stronger or weaker THC oil, feel free to use more herb with less oil and vice-versa. Your mileage may vary, so ‘season to taste.’
Decarb Weed Recipe
Note on heat: Decarbing weed can be done in a regular oven but the process will produce a weed smell (not as bad as smoking but definitely noticeable although it dissipates quickly). If concerned about odor, a portable toaster oven may lend itself to more remote decarbing.
What You Need to Decarb Weed
An oven, 1 oz. weed., cookie sheet, parchment paper
- Heat oven to 240º F / 115º C.
- Break weed down by hand to pebble size. Not too fine, not too fat.
- Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper (foil can also work).
- Spread weed evenly in a single layer on the cookie sheet.
- Heat for 30-60 minutes, stirring and rotating occasionally, until buds turn lightly golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and cool to room temperature.
Going low and slow ensures you preserve as much of the cannabis plant’s cannabinoids like THC and CBD as possible.
Making Weed Olive Oil
Note on heat: Infusing extra virgin olive oil with cannabis requires low and slow heat. There’s multiple ways to do this, but it’s important to avoid overheating the oil which could damage your herb’s cannabinoids and terpenes, making your oil weaker.
Slow cookers, like small Crock Pots, are perfect oil infusion devices for cannabis because they can’t get hot enough to destroy weed’s cannabinoids during extraction. Any other method will require extra attention to avoid burning.
Is Olive Oil Good for Cannabis?
Cannabinoids like THC work best when they are bound to fats. Oils are perfect mediums. And, while olive oil is not usually the preferred base for extraction, it works well in this recipe for its Italian flavor and still delivers the goods.
Weed Olive Oil Recipe
The 420DC cannaoil recipe helps build layers of new dimensions in weed pizza. So, you can adjust how much THC olive oil you use. Ultimately, this recipe should yield weed pizza slices with between 10-30mg of THC.
Potency of your cannaoil and/or weed pizza depends on many factors. You have to consider the weed used, it’s decarboxylation, and the extraction success.
Note on oil flavor: you can add herbs for flavor and to counteract the taste of weed when the oil is done. How much your infused oil tastes like marijuana depends on how well it’s strained.
Dried oregano is often called the ‘pizza spice,’ and can be used liberally. Fresh thyme also works well. For real layers of flavor, add sun-dried tomatoes which can be saved after infusion and used on top of your ultimate weed pizza.

Making Weed Pizza Dough
Making this weed pizza dough is a matter of binding fats and starches together with gluten. Making this recipe by hand is the best way to ensure it’s done, by the feel of the texture. You can’t find that with a dough hook and mixing stand.
Using infused cannabis olive oil in the dough is the foundation of weed pizza.
What You Need to Make Weed Pizza Dough
Making ‘happy pizza’ as it’s sometimes called, requires 5 Cups of flour, 2 ½ cups warm water, 1 Pkg. Yeast (2 ¼ tsp.), 1 tsp. Sugar, 2 tsp. Salt, 2 Tbsp. Cannaoil, a large glass bowl, plastic cling wrap.
Note on dough flavor: you can add dried herbs and/or spices for flavor, including weed if you like the taste.
Powdered garlic and onion work well. You can also use fresh, chopped thyme or minced, roasted garlic to make your ultimate weed pizza.
Weed Pizza Dough Recipe
- Heat water to 110 (it should feel like warm bath water).
- Add Yeast and Sugar to water and set aside.
- Pour flour and salt (and optional spices/herbs) in a bowl. Make a well in the middle.
- Add 2 Tbsp. Weed Olive Oil to water (yeast should look puffy after 5 mins.), pour into Flour well.
- Using your hand or a wooden spoon, start circling the well, slowly incorporating Flour until a wet ball forms.
- Dust counter with flour and pour dough onto it.
- Knead dough for up to 15 mins. Adding flour and/or liquid to adjust texture. Dough should feel smooth to the touch when done but not too stiff.
- Once desired texture is achieved pull all sides of the dough ball down and under, to the bottom, pinching each pull to the middle.
- Drizzle clean Glass Bowl with cannaoil. Coat the top of your dough with the oil and place the ball in the bowl.
- Cover with Plastic Cling Wrap and let sit in a warm place for up to an hour.
This recipe for the ultimate weed pizza dough yields up to 3 12” pizzas.
Making Weed Pizza Sauce
The tomato sauce on 420DC’s ultimate weed pizza is also seasoned with weed-infused olive oil. Since we are making Weed pizza sauce from scratch, it’s important not to add your canna oil too early. It’s best to add infused oil at the end.
You can always use a store-bought sauce and finish it with cannaoil, but that wouldn’t be ‘ultimate,’ would it? Stick with this sauce for fast, authentic flavor.
Note on weed pizza sauce flavor: This is one cook’s approach but your tastes may vary. Feel free to add the herbs and spices you want to make this ultimate weed pizza sauce your own.

The Best Weed Pizza
Our favorite in the 420DC test kitchen is a classic Margherita Weed Pizza which pairs nicely with ; slices of creamy-soft mozzarella and tomato slices (or weed oil-soaked sun dried tomatoes for truly top tier weed pizza) and finished with ribbons of fresh basil.
Don’t forget to drizzle the cooked weed pizza with the last of your cannabis-infused olive oil for the grand touch.
Will Weed Pizza Get Me High?
This is a trick question. There are too many variables for a simple yes or no answer. Potency, extraction, tolerance, physiology and more are all variables as to how high one will get when eating a slice of weed pie.
Chances are, with the strength of our Cannabis-Infused Olive Oil recipe, you will certainly feel it. That’s the point, right? Your weed pizza’s potency depends on all layers.
Mangeano! Buon appetito!
The ultimate weed pizza brings cannabis to the savory side. You can enjoy a slice or two to gauge the effects and freeze the rest for a quick snack. Better yet, have a weed pizza party and invite your smoke circle friends!
Just try to avoid pounding the rest of that pie when the munchies kick in!
