A Step-by-Step Guide On How To Grow Magic Mushrooms

how to grow magic mushrooms

Now that you have all the necessary equipment, ingredients, and cleaning supplies and you have set aside the proper space to conduct your grow operation, it’s time to start growing magic mushrooms. This guide is broken down into 6 easy steps to make the process simpler for you to follow. Take your time and make sure to follow each step carefully to ensure you end up with the proper finished product.

Step One: The Preparation Stage

The first step is all about preparation. This is where you will prepare your jars and substrate. First, you will need to take the hammer and nail, hammering in four holes in the lids of the jars (after having disinfected them thoroughly). Make sure the holes are spaced out evenly.

Next, you need to prepare the substrate. In each jar, you will add 2/3 cup vermiculite and 1/4 cup of water in a mixing bowl. Make sure to drain any excess water. Add 1/4 cup of brown rice flour per half-pint jar to the bowl and combine it with your moist vermiculite.

Fill the jars, but do not fill them too tightly, leave about 1/4 space from the top of the jar. Make sure to sterilize and add some vermiculite at the time to insulate the substance. Make sure the lids are tight and cover them with tin foil. Place a small towel or paper towel into a cooking pot and place the jars on top. Add tap water about halfway up the side of the jars and bring it up to a slow boil. You will let this steam for approximately 75-90 minutes. If the pot runs dry, just add more water.

At the very end, it’s time to let it cool.

Step Two: Time To Inoculate

Now, it’s time to heat the length of your syringe needle until it glows red hot. Wait for it to cool and wipe it with an alcohol wipe for sanitary purposes. Pull back the plunger and shake well to distribute the magic mushroom spores evenly.

After that, it’s time to inject the spores into your jars as far as it will go through the holes. Make sure to do this for each hole you made and cover the holes with micropore tape when you are done. You will repeat this process for every single jar you have.

Step Three: Wait For The Mycelium To Colonize

Take your jars and place them somewhere sanitary and out of the way. It’s best to avoid direct sunlight and temperatures that exceed room temperature. The white, fluffing looking mycelium will appear after around a week or so. Make sure to check for any signs of contamination from any weird smells or discolorations. If you notice anything of the sort, you must throw the jar away because some of the contaminants that could be present are harmful to humans. So, err on these of caution and get rid of any suspicious jars.

If your jars are all safe, time to consolidate your jars after a few weeks so the mycelium can strengthen its hold to the substrate.

Step Four: Prepare Your Growing Chamber

The next step is preparing your growing chamber (using the plastic storage container you obtained). Place the box over stable objects and ensure there is constant airflow underneath. Lastly, add the perlite over the base of your growing chamber. You want the perlite layer to be approximately 4-5 inches deep.

Step Five: The Fruiting Stage

Open the jars and remove the dry vermiculite from each jar making sure to be careful not to break or damage them. Rinse the cakes to remove any loose vermiculite and place the cakes into the cooking pot with water to rehydrate them. After 24-hours, remove and roll your cakes with dry vermiculite using a mixing bowl. Repeat this process for each cake so you don’t break or ruin them.

After you have completed this for each cake, place them in the grow chamber sitting atop a piece of tin foil. They should be spaced evenly inside the grow chamber. Lastly, you will need to monitor and optimize the growing conditions, maintaining proper humidity and airflow.

Step Six: Time To Harvest

Time to harvest! Look out for the fruits that will appear as little white bumps and after 5-12 days, they will be ready for harvest. When the time comes, all you need to do is pick your fruit. Do not let them grow until full maturity because they lose their potency as they age.
